What Is The Concept of Division?
Short division involves questions with a dividend greater than 10 and a divisor 9 or less, for example 48 divided by 4. In place value, 48 has 4 tens (40) and 8 units (8). The bus top method can be used whenever we divide a number which has tens and units with a single digit number. The single digit numbers are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. However, we hardly need to divide by 0, since the answer is undefined. However, when zero is the dividend the answer is always 0. For example, 5 ÷ 0 = 0, 7 ÷ 0 = 0, 200 ÷ 0 = 0, 1364759 ÷ 0 = 0. The example belows shows 78 ÷ 2. 2 'goes into' 7 three times and the remainder is 1. 1 is carried over to 8 to make 18. 2 'goes into' 18 nine times. The final answer is 39. In example 2, a three digit number serves as the dividend. Three digit numbers contain a value for the hundreds, tens and units. For example the number 652 has 6 hundreds (600), 5 tens (50) and 2 units (2). 652 ÷ 4 is 163, the working out is shown in the example below.
How To Do Long Division
Long division involves a divisor of 10 or greater and a dividend larger than 10 also. Remember, the dividend is the number that is being divided. In the example below the question is 637 ÷ 13. 637 is the dividend and 13 is the divisor. A useful mnemonic to memorise the rule for working out long division is; daddy, mummy, sister, brother, which stands for divide, multiply, subtract the 'bring down'. The example below shows 637 ÷ 13 and the answer is 49.
