What is Area?
Area is space inside a space. The perimeter is the distance around the shape. The yellow shaded area represents the space inside.
Students will need to know the correct units for area. When we measure area we include a "squared" after the unit. For example cm², m², km², or centimeter squared, meter squared and kilometer squared.
Below shows an example of area using a 1cm by 1 cm grid.
On 1 cm square paper a 5 cm by 5 cm square has an area of 25 cm². A 6 cm by 6 cm square is 36 cm² or 36 boxes.

What Is The Formula of Area?
Below shows a formula sheet for the area of 2D shapes including: Square, Rectangle, Triangle, Trapezium, Parallelogram, Rhombus and Kite. The formula for the area of a square is base x height, or length squared. Many quadrilaterals derive their formulas from the basic formula for a square.

Area Problem 4
A compound shape is a shape made up with two or more common 2D shapes, such as rectangles, squares and triangles. The compound shape below is constructed with two rectangles. The first rectangle measures 5 cm by 6 cm. The second rectangle measures 3 cm by 15 cm. The total area is 75 cm².
