Horizontal and Vertical Graphs

This section includes for you straight-line graphs, quadratic graphs and cubic graphs. The image below shows the graphs of x = -4 and x = 2. The coordinates are (-4, 4), (-4, 1), (-4, -5) and (2, 3), (2, -2), (2, -6).

Graphs worksheet 1

The image below shows the graphs y = 3 and y = -4. The coordinates are (-5, 3), (0, 3), (5, 3) and (-6, -4), (1, -4), (3, -4).

Other Graphs

The image below shows the graphs for y = x, y = x2, y = x3, y = |x|, y = 1/x, y = √x, y = bx, x2 + y2 = r2.

Quadratic, Cubic, Reciprocal, Exponential Graphs

When straight-line graphs are horizontal the equation for the line will start as y = "a certain number", such as y = 3, or y = 5. When straight-line graphs are vertical the equation for the line will start as x = "a certain number", such as x = 3, or x = 5. Suggested after topics include: Simultaneous Equations, Quadratic Graphs and Cubic Graphs.

The image below shows the general equation for all quadratic graphs which is y = ax2 + bx + c. The curve is a parabola which has a "U" shape. The highest power is 2, or x2. Cubic graphs are "S" shaped. The general equation for the cubic graph is y = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d. The highest power is 3.

Quadratic Graphs example

Reciprocal graphs have the  general  equation y = a/x. Reciprocal graphs have two asymptotes and its highest power is - 1. Exponential graphs have the general equation y = ax . Exponential graphs have one asymptote and its highest power is x.
