What Does It Mean to Substitute In Math?

In maths we can substitute into expressions and we can substitute into formulae. Expressions do not have an equals sign whereas formulas equal to something. The table below shows the expressions 5a, a - 5, 16 - a, 7a + 3. The value of a is 2. The answer is 10, -3, 14 and 17.

How to Substitute Values

The diagrams below show questions which substitute values for n. If n = 8 work out 4n. The answer is 32.
