What Are Congruent Shapes?
Congruent shapes have the same shape and size. The angles in congruent shapes are always equal. The image below shows congruent right-angle triangles.
Congruent shapes can be reflected, translated or rotated. Shapes remain congruent after transformation except in the case of enlargement. Enlarged shapes are similar but after reflection, rotation and translation, the shapes are congruent (the same size), whereas enlarged shapes are similar (proportional).
Are Congruent Shapes Similar?
Two triangles are congruent if one of the following criteria are satistifed. S stands for side, A stands for angle. SSS means three equal sides. ASA means two angles the same and the marked angles are equal. SAS means two sides are equivalent and the angle shown is the same. AAS means two angles are the same, the angles given, and the angle indicated is also equivalent. RHS means right angle triangle where the hypotenuse and other side are equal. The hypotenuse is the longest side of the right angle triangle.
